I didn’t answer. I kissed him and kissed him and kissed him again. I knew what he was asking me to do. Be his forever secret. Share these few weeks, and then go back to what? Texting? Nothing? Pretending we were strangers. Even if we could see each other again, once he left here we could never be this again. He couldn’t afford to. Once he returned, he was going to have to get serious about a wife and an heir, and I wasn’t going to want to watch.

The thought of being there for him and encouraging him to be with someone else made my insides turn. I’d fully admit there were stronger people than I to be able to pine and not have. So I’d do this, but I was going to tell him we had to cut off all contact after he left. I’d change my number and vanish from his life. It was the only way I could do it.

So I didn’t answer. I kissed him and fucked him, and then held him while he slept, coming to terms with the gravity of what I was going to do. Because I rarely liked anyone. I was really damn good at my introverting and keeping people at a distance, but once I let someone in, they were in. They got a piece of my cold dead heart. So I’d give him that piece and then I’d cut it out of my chest when he left. Easy right?

No, because the reality of it was I was someone to warm his bed, but to me it was so much more.
